Does the backlight still work after regeneration?
Yes, the backlighting works the same as before regeneration – and often looks even better! Laser technology not only does not damage the backlighting function, but actually improves its readability and aesthetics.
How does the backlighting in buttons work?
In premium cars (BMW, Audi, Mercedes, Volkswagen, Volvo), the buttons have built-in LEDs that shine through transparent symbols. The factory pictograms are laser-engraved in an opaque layer of paint – this allows the light to pass only through the symbols, creating a “glowing icon” effect.
What do we do during regeneration?
Our process is identical to the factory process and fully compatible with LED backlighting:
- We remove the worn layer of paint (without interfering with the electronics),
- We apply a new, opaque paint (blocks light),
- We laser burn the symbols – we create transparent “windows” for light,
- We secure with a protective coating (still transparent in the areas of the symbols).
Effect: light passes through the restored symbols exactly as it did through the original ones.
Why is laser better than other methods?
Attempts at repair using “home” methods often destroy the backlight:
- Painting with a marker/paint – creates an opaque layer that blocks the light. The symbols are invisible at night!
- Stickers – also block the light or shift, causing the backlight to shine “next to” the icon.
- Laser – burning the symbol means removing the paint in that spot, so the light shines through perfectly.
What about coloured backlights?
Regeneration works with any type of backlight:
- White LEDs (most common in BMW, Audi, Mercedes),
- Orange/amber (Volkswagen, Skoda, Seat),
- Red (some sports models),
- RGB variable (BMW Ambient Light, Mercedes Multicolor).
Regardless of the colour, the technology remains the same – the backlight passes through a laser-burned symbol.
Examples of cars we have refurbished (with working backlighting):
- BMW 5/6/7 series – steering wheel buttons, iDrive joystick, air conditioning,
- Audi A4/A6/Q5 – MMI panels, air conditioning buttons, audio,
- Mercedes W204/W212 – multifunction buttons, COMAND,
- Volkswagen Passat/Golf – centre tunnel panels, navigation.
Can the backlighting stop working?
If the backlighting is no longer working before regeneration (burnt-out LED), laser regeneration will not fix it – this is a separate electronic fault, unrelated to the paint layer. In this case, electronic repair (LED replacement) is required, which we can perform as an additional service.
Summary: Laser regeneration preserves 100% of the backlight’s functionality. The symbols shine evenly, sharply and clearly – just like on a new panel, but without the astronomical replacement costs.
