Renovation of pictograms – steering wheel buttons in a Porsche
Last updated: 09.10.2026
Problem
Worn-out icons on the multimedia control buttons on a Porsche steering wheel. A particular challenge was the restoration of the plus/minus buttons, including the silver ‘Tiptronic’ lettering.
Material type
Painted plastic – control buttons on a Porsche steering wheel (multimedia module and Tiptronic)
Solutions applied
As part of the project, we carried out a precise restoration of the multifunction button panels. The process involved:
- removal of the control modules from the steering wheel,
- chemical removal of worn paint coatings whilst preserving the structure of the components,
- professional painting with paints resistant to heavy use,
- laser engraving of multimedia control pictograms (black buttons),
- precise reproduction of the +/- button markings and the “Tiptronic” inscription whilst retaining the original silver colour scheme,
- final application of a protective coating,
- reassembly in accordance with factory tolerances.
Final result: the buttons look just like the originals from the showroom, the two-tone buttons (black and silver) have been reproduced with laser precision, guaranteeing durability and resistance to many years of use in sporty driving conditions.

Yes, and that was the specific challenge in this project. We laser-engrave the black multimedia pictograms and separately reproduce the +/- markings and the “Tiptronic” lettering in the original silver colour scheme, keeping the two-tone finish exactly as it left the factory.
It requires more precision, yes. Each colour layer has to be applied and engraved separately so the silver lettering stays sharp against the black background rather than bleeding into it – that precision is exactly what laser engraving is suited for, unlike hand-painting.
Yes, we use paints resistant to heavy daily use specifically because steering wheel buttons see constant contact. The laser-engraved symbols are cut into the coating rather than sitting on top of it, so they’re built to withstand years of use in sporty driving conditions, not just look good on delivery.
Time and cost depend on the number of button modules and whether multi-colour lettering (like the silver Tiptronic markings) needs to be reproduced. The standard process includes removal from the steering wheel, stripping, repainting, precision laser engraving, protective coating, and reassembly. We provide an exact quote individually after receiving photos.
We work with steering wheel buttons from all sports and premium brands, not just Porsche – including BMW, Mercedes-AMG, Audi, Ferrari, and Aston Martin. The restoration principle is the same regardless of brand: precision painting and laser-recreated pictograms matching the original colours and proportions.
